We need the microbes on our skin

One of the most important protective measures against COVID-19 is constant hand washing. Through conversations with friends and family, many have been complaining of hand dryness and even breaking of skin in some instances. That could be due to the fact that people not only wash their hands with soap and water frequently, but they use alcohol and other sanitizers, as antimicrobial agents.
It is a well-known fact that we have millions of bacteria and other microorganisms living on our skin, which is the largest organ in our body. These are called “normal flora” or “microflora”. Their number varies according to the skin area. Their presence, in certain numbers of course, protects the skin against infections with pathogenic (disease causing) microorganisms by producing antimicrobial agents themselves, in addition to other role.
The constant use of antimicrobial agents will cause an imbalance between the skin and the normal flora because of their elimination from the skin or reduction in their numbers. The presence of these microorganisms regulates the release of inflammatory substances from immune cells that will cause skin irritation. Moreover, these microorganisms help in healing of skin wounds and act as a barrier from substances that cause allergy. Their presence actually gives the skin the plump, moist healthy look. In fact the absence of these microorganisms has been associated with the development of skin allergies, eczema, skin ulcers, acne, psoriasis and fungal infections.
It is a real conflict now that this information has been mentioned. Don’t worry, there are alternatives. Keep washing and sanitizing your hand but eat healthy and drink a lot of water. A balanced diet, abundant in vegetables and fruits, is known to maintain the normal flora of the skin, keeping in mind to avoid sugars. Exercise is another great measure to let your skin flourish because it increases blood flow allowing nutrients and oxygen to reach your skin cells. Finally, it is important to use skin creams to avoid dryness.
